PLAYBLOC

Intermediate Architectural Design Studio 2022
Challenging Arrested Development: Re-Conceptualizing the Three-Dimentional City
Instructor - Graham Livesey

Location - Calgary, AB
Software - Rhino, Grasshopper, Illustrator, Photoshop

Taking into consideration the lack of “kid-friendly” programming in Calgary’s downtown core, PlayBloc provides a safe, family-friendly environement that works to increase vibrancy in the West End. Influenced by the research of Dr. Stuart Brown (Founder of the National Institute for Play), the tower is intended to provide spaces for every play personality.

Placed above a public aquarium and terrarium on the lower levels, “play spheres” act as spaces of self-directed play in conjunction with daycare “objects” which act as spaces of directed learning. Large clerestories provide impressive views of the geodesic “play spheres” from a variety of perspectives, evoking a sense of curiosity and interest to explore the tower for all it has to offer.
