Civic Commons Catalyst: City of Medicine Hat
Instructors - Alberto de Salvatierra, Dan Hapton
Collaborators - Jeffrey Moore, Maru Kim
Location - Medicine Hat, AB
Software - Rhino, Grasshopper, ArcGIS, Illustrator, Photoshop, V-Ray
The North Railway District represents a significant opportunity for the city of Medicine Hat, although it currently exists within a set of incomplete and fragmented systems. During this studio, students worked on devloping ideas, in collaboration with The City of Medicine Hat, that would promote vibrancy and revitilization in the district and it’s surrounding areas.

Our desire was to see the North Railway District behave successfully as an active part within a larger symbiotic and infrastructural system. By creating a link to surrounding ecosystems, as well as proposed and existing infrastructure, a diverse experience is developed, allowing the pride of Medicine Hat to be accessible to both visitors and locals.

Immigrants often experience an overwhelming sense of grief as they leave behind the familiarity of their home country and the personal relationship that have been built there. This grief creates pathways to feelings of loss and isolation.

In the process of transition, it is important that new immigrants are able to find a community of people that understand and support their experience. It is pivotal that new memories and traditions are formed in order to feel a sense of belonging in their new environment.

Our site provides a safe space for new immigrants to reflect on their current situation and ensures that they can interact with their new community. Some overarching goals of the project are: to decrease the difficulty of social challenges presented by the city and to represent diversity in a way that connects various cultures. The provision of spaces for community opens up the door for empathy towards the immigration story and struggle.

The play of ascending and descending spaces are used to create a sense of progress and accomplishment as the individuals move upwards towards their destination. This can help to instill a feeling of empowerment and encouragement for them to focus on their personal growth and development, which is especially important for new immigrants as they adjust to a new environment. At the same time descending spaces can create a sense of reflection and introspection as one moves downwards towards a quieter, more private space. This can provide an opportunity for new immigrants to reflect on their experiences and emotions and process their feelings in a more contemplative and peaceful setting. In addition, by creating distinct views the art centre will represent the transitionary journey that moves towards seeking and finding a new future and identity while maintaining a connection to the past.
The program uses ascension and descension into space to convey a sense of progression and retreat between the past, present and future. One of the main ways used to draw people upwards and out is the use of views - meant to remind users of their immigrant experience.

The reconciliation bridge acts a reminder of the process of healing and public truth sharing. The Bow River and pathway emphasizes the creation of new community. The Bow Tower representats the creation of a new identity.

Standing seam panels with curtain wall glazing make up the outer exterior facade, while operable fin walls act as a method of shading. Cementitious panels are used as cladding in the courtyard space, allowing for colour customization, where lighter colours can be used to brighten up this space which would recieve little sunlight during the winter months.
